Dog activities
Whether for competitions or fun, dog activities are varied and offer a range of different types of activities. Some competitions and sports are specifically designed for certain breeds such as Terrier Trials whereas others are simply open to any dog, regardless of breed or size. Obedience Trials are another great way for a dog and its owner to bond closely. Agility is great for the dog too.
Dog activities help to keep the dog in shape and it ensures that the dog has mental stimulation as well, combining speed with accuracy over a number of obstacles in a course. These tests allow the owner to work with the dog closely and help to build a working relationship between the two.
Although any breeds can compete in these activities, the most common include Shetland Sheepdogs, Greyhounds, Whippets, Border Collies, Jack Russell Terriers and Afghans.
Lure Coursing is another speed related event that involves dogs chasing a ‘prey' that is usually simply a plastic bag pulled along quickly. The dogs then chase it and their times are recorded. Tracking is also a sport open to all dog breeds. The dogs are required to follow a track after it has been laid. Scent hounds were specifically designed to be better than others at this event but any dog breed can compete.
Hunting is another sport that appeals to many dogs and owners alike. Field tests and hunt tests are examples of these events. Herding tests offer herding breeds a way to demonstrate their abilities and Earthdog Trials are designed to give Terriers and Dachshunds the opportunity to develop and impress with their hunting skills.
