Bull Mastiff
The Mastiff is an extremely heavy dog. It is a very large, muscular dog and this breed is exceptionally powerful too! It has a broad head which is heavy and square. The muzzle is short. The eyes are small and dark, usually brown. The ears are also dark coloured and the tail is carried high. The Mastiff has a black mask around the muzzle and eyes. The coat is short and is generally light coloured in golden, brindle and fawn shades. It is renowned for being a huge, extremely strong and muscular animal.
Temperament : |
The Mastiff is well renowned as being a great guard dog. It is also an excellent fighter and has exceptional patience too! It usually has an unquestionable temperament towards its own family and is highly protective as well. As it is so large, it is formidable against other smaller animals. Although they can prove to be fairly difficult dogs to train, obedience is achievable with them through firm and patient training and handling. |
Health issues : |
As with many large dogs, these are prone to hip difficulties. Feeding should also be restricted as they tend to overeat. Heart conditions may also pose problems for this fine breed. |
Exercise : |
Running freely in parks is not recommended due to their size and potential ferocity towards other dogs. Regular exercise is a good idea for this breed through long walks for example. It is essential to keep them in shape and as healthy as possible to prevent the onset of such conditions. |
Life expectancy : |
Like the majority of dogs, living for an extremely long time is highly unlikely. It is much more usual for them to survive until the age of around ten to twelve years. |
Grooming : |
Brushing this short coat is required a few times a week and it is simple to groom them. A firm bristle brush is adequate. Bathe only when required and dry it with a towel for a clean, smooth result. |
