Cocker Spaniel

These beautifully soft and lovable dogs ( the Cocker Spaniel ) are silky, feathered and have a medium length coat. The Cocker Spaniel has very long, soft ears that hang down by the cheeks. The muzzle is wide and deep. It has a broad, square jaw. The nose is black or brown, varying on the dog's colour. The Cocker Spaniel has round eyes and they are dark too. The body is short and not particularly strong or muscular. The coat is usually black or black and tan. The tail is docked and is carried in line with the back. It certainly likes to wag it excitedly too!



  

Temperament :

The Cocker Spaniel is a very good worker and gundog. It also makes a great household pet. Great with youngsters, it is a lovely animal that s very gentle and sweet. It is also a highly respectful dog. This breed is quite timid and loves attention. Easy to train, they are eager to please their owner and get on well with people and other pets too! It is quite a protective dog.

Health issues :

There are some breed specific conditions that these dogs may develop. These include glaucoma, cataracts and hip problems.

Exercise :

With a lot of stamina, they enjoy exercise and should be given the opportunity to run around in parks and go on long, brisk walks. The coat can get tangled very easily though so be careful!

Life expectancy :

They tend to live for about twelve to fifteen years on average.

Grooming :

Grooming these dogs is not such a simple take however. Their eyes require cleaning regularly and the coat needs to be cleaned and brushed frequently. Every three months or so, the coat should be shampooed and the nails and coat should be trimmed occasionally too. Gentle brushing is the key to a glossy, clean coat. This dog tends to shed an average amount of fur as well.
